Am I allowed to say this isn't your mama's rice cooker? It's certainly not my Mom's rice cooker. Growing up, from the time I can remember we always had a rice cooker and the brand was Zojirushi. It was dependable and easy to use but it did not have the bells and whistles and features of the one pictured above.
I recall my Mom calling home before leaving work every night and asking one of us to make a pot of rice. Our question back would always be, how many cups? We used our Zojirushi rice cooker almost every day. In our Vietnamese-American household, Jasmine rice was a staple.
So I was really excited when I had the opportunity to review AND giveaway a Zojirushi rice cooker. I say this isn't your mama's rice cooker because it has tons of options and you can make way more than just Jasmine rice. You can make sweet sticky rice, sushi rice, basmati rice, risotto and much, much more.
This rice cooker boasts a dome shaped bowl which means no more eyeballing the water level for me. I use the easy to read guide depending on what type of rice I'm making.
Features of the Micom 5.5 Rice Cooker & Warmer include:
- Multiple settings for different types of rice
- A warmer setting to keep your rice and foods warm
- Slow cook setting make soups and other recipes
- A sound alert (song) to let you know the rice is done
- The disc in the lid is removable, making it easy to clean (if you have ever owned a rice cooker before, I know you'll appreciate this!)
- A domed bowl that allows for even heating and has markings for easy measuring
How to make Jasmine rice in a rice cooker:
- Using the measuring cup that came with the rice cooker, I measure out the rice. Usually about 3 cups of rice.
- Rinse the rice with warm water and drain several times. The water will become less cloudy with each rinse.
- Add enough warm water to the rice bowl at the appropriate level. I like to add it at a little bit below the level. For Jasmine rice, under the mixed section for 3 cups if using 3 cups of uncooked rice.
- Place the bowl inside the rice cooker and close the lid.
- Using the menu button, select the Mixed mode. And then press the Start button.
Perfectly cooked rice…when you hit the Start button, it plays Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and when cooking is complete, it plays it again! Such a nice little touch the Zojirushi company has added to what I call the Cadillac of rice cookers.
I was giddy when the box arrived and still am giddy about it. Is it okay to get get giddy over a kitchen appliance? No one that knows me should be surprised. By the way, please don't tell anyone that I hugged my new rice cooker several times since I have received it. I'm so excited to share with one of the readers of the little kitchen…the same rice cooker!

Zojirushi makes the best rice cookers! I also have memories of my mom calling from work and asking me to make rice in this rickety old machine she hauled over from Taiwan. It always came out slightly crusty on the bottom. My first rice cooker was a Zojirushi, and I loved it but had to upgrade to a bigger one. Alas, my current model is a different brand, and I’d love to get a new one.

Would love a new rice cooker. I “inherited” my current rice cooker from my aunt. It’s still operable but not the prettiest thing. Rice to me is like spinach to Popeye. Finally got my American husband to understand this. When I’m grumpy, that’s his first question – “Have you had your rice this week?” I cook my rice using the finger method. I measure the water with the first line of my middle finger. I haven’t been able to teach this method to my husband. This rice cooker appears husband-proof.

I am a full time student studying nutrition and I always broke. My school schedule only allows me to work 2.5days a week. The little money that I made from my job, of course, goes to food. I love food.
I do not own a rice cooker. Believe it or not but I still use the old method of using just plain old pot and stir and stir and stir. I tried to save money and splurge myself with a rice cooker, but something else always came up.
If I could win this contest, which I highly doubt, because I do not win anything, period. Hypothetically speaking, if I were to win this, I would imagine it would be like winning a lottery. By the way, I did not realize a rice cooker could do so much. That makes me want it even more. Imagine, gone are the days of slaving myself over the stove to make some rice and no more microwave rice. Yayyyyy!
Thanks for considering me! By the way, I love your blog!

I have a plastic rice cooker that is for the microwave only. It functions okay, but is far below my expectations. I have always wanted a nice rice cooker that I could plug in, program, and it would cook rice perfectly for me. I didn’t know this one existed, but now that I know it does, I would love to own one. I would like to make sticky rice with it. Maybe I could get some good traditional recipes from my cousin in Japan.

We are able to eat limited amounts of gluten in our home, so rice is very important to us. This past year we purchased a simple rice cooker from a local department store. It works, but if we’re not careful it also burns the rice. While cooking the cooker sputters rice/water all around the kitchen. We are sold on the idea of a rice cooker, but would love to get a “real” rice cooker.

I want and need a rice cooker because rice is our main staple rather than potatoes. Rice makes a perfect base for so many meals! I do currently own a rice cooker. The problem with it is that when I follow the instructions exactly, it burns the rice. I really have to baby it when I’m cooking rice or my rice will be burnt! I’m hoping to score this cooker so my rice will turn out well.

I make a lot of rice and a while back I decided I’d better get a rice cooker. I didn’t know much about the different brands, so I picked one that was in my budget and brought it home. Well, as it turns out, this rice maker is not so great -every time I make rice, it is crunchy on the bottom!!! The rice is fully cooked, but the element must be so hot that it cooks the rice to the point that there is a thick layer of crunchiness at the bottom of every pot of rice! I now find myself making rice on the stove again!

I have been interested in getting a rice cooker for years (have never owned one). I’ve always cooked rice on the stove. Now my work schedule means that my husband cooks dinner most nights. It’s always an adventure to see how the rice turns out-some nights it is soupy and undercooked, other nights it is mushy, and it is sometimes just burned. I think a rice cooker might just do the trick!

I recently got my own place and in lieu of doing so couldn’t bring my sister’s rice cooker with me. My boys and I LOVE rice. We would eat it at every meal if we could. I love mine best seasoned with a little bit of butter or for breakfast with scrambled eggs. My boys like theirs plain more often then not. We make rice as a side dish with just about every dinner (until we got our own place). We would top the rice with vegetables, make dishes like rice and refrigerate it to make veggie “sushi” and so much more. To have the ability to do that again would be a wonderful blessing as rice is a staple in our diets. Thanks for hosting this giveaway.

I have tried to cook rice for years. It never comes out right. It is usually watery or dry and burned. This cooker would make my rice meals so perfect!

I’d love this rice cooker because it has measurement marks inside, I know that would help the rice turn out perfectly. I’d make red beans and serve it with the rice. I’ve never owned a rice cooker

I would give it to my friend for christmas. She really can’t cook much. At least if she had a rice cooker, I’d know she wasn’t a starving student 🙂

I would love to win this! My rice cooker has a short in it, and I resorted to cooking my rice on the stovetop. I would love a full-proof way to make brown rice.

We have had the same rice cooker since 1985! I love to make fried rice and it starts the day before with the rice cooker.

I think you can most definitely say that this was not my mom’s rice cooker–she did want one but the price was just a little too steep! This rice cooker would definitely upgrade the one I have currently, it only has a “Cook” button. The first thing I’d make in is good ol’ white rice with steamed Chinese sausage 🙂

It would be great to have this rice cooker so that I could make perfectly cooked rice each time! I think the first dish I would make with it would be something my SIL taught me to do with Basmati rice. After the rice is cooked, you brown the bottom, invert the pan and top with Sumac spice and plain yogurt. I haven’t ever owned a rice cooker before, but love that this one can also function as a slow cooker (which I also don’t own). I’d love to hear it play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star!

I have been considering buying a rice cooker for more than a year. We eat rice at nearly every dinner and have potatoes only rarely. My husband is a Bengali and can’t go w/o rice for more than 48 hours.

I have never owned or used a rice cooker. This looks so fantastic and easy to use. Perfect rice every time— never sticky or under-cooked. Sounds wonderful. Would love to own one now.

I never owned a rice cooker until I lived in Japan and fell in love with making rice. I’m not sure of the brand rice cooker I bought here in the states, but it is pretty simple. Just has the on or off button and turns off when ready. Love that the zojirushi rice cooker has all those programmable settings. How awesome to leave for work with the rice in there, and come home to it all ready to go. Yum

My daughter just returned from college and her best friend uses a rice cooker.
She learned to love rice and cook with many different recipes. It sure would be great to have a rice cooker.
We love to make stir fry dishes and just have plain rice as as a side dish, a cooker would be much used.
K. Goin says
We’ve had a dinky old fashioned rice cooker for 15 years. It has an on switch/warmer switch and a light. That’s it – this thing looks like a spaceship! My daughter love rice or any kind. Would love to see if Quinoa would work in this.

I need a rice cooker because we eat A LOT of rice in my house. My daughter loves to cook rice and just eat it plain. My husband loves to mix it with milk and sugar and I have several recipes that we use rice with. We eat rice at least twice a week. We have a rice cooker, but it’s old and needs to be replaced. I would love to learn how to use it to make fried rice.

I need a rice cooker because I suck at cooking rice. I swear, I think the reason we don’t eat (or like) rice much is because I don’t know how to cook it.

OMG…I so need that! I am a great cook, with everything but rice!!! I usually cook with brown rice, and it seems to take forever. I always need to add more and more water, definitely more liquid to rice than the packaged directions say. This would help me a great deal!! It would be a life(cooking) savour!!
Cathy W says
I’d cook rice in it, love different types of rice. I have owned 1 or 2 rice cookers in the past but very low end types!

I have owned many rice cookers before, and I have always reverted back to ‘pot on stove’ (a nonstick pot, of course). It would be nice to have a wonderful rice cooker such as this so I could evenly cook rice & easily clean it!

i would use it to make rice, lots of rice. I like brown rice but would nice to try different varieties.
