These heart-shaped thumbprint cookies are easy to make and pack a perfect little bit of sweetness that I know everyone will love. Make them today for Valentine's Day or for the holidays!
I have always loved thumbprint cookies and I love this little mix for Valentine's Day, don't you?
If you don't want to do the heart-shaped thumbprint, you can always just use a spoon to add the “thumbprint” shape before adding your jam.
Thumbprint Cookie Recipe Ingredients
- unbleached all-purpose flour
- baking powder
- unsalted butter
- granulated sugar
- extra large egg
- pure vanilla extract
- strawberry jam or orange marmalade
- powdered sugar
How to add the heart-shaped thumbprint in these thumbprint cookies
Use the end of a curved butter knife to make the heart shape. Spray it with baking spray if needed. Place the knife standing up to make the left side of the heart and then the other side.
I find that if you let the dough balls sit for a few minutes after rolling them into balls, it takes less baking spray.
These thumbprint cookies have the perfect amount of sweetness and you won't be able to eat just one, I know it!
Thumbprint Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 extra large egg, beaten
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup strawberry jam, or orange marmalade
Glaze
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 3 teaspoons water
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- Heat oven to 350°F .
- In a small mixing bowl, mix together flour and baking powder. Set aside.
- Add butter and both sugars to a large mixing bowl. Using an electric hand mixer, cream the sugars and butter together until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla extract and continue mixing until completely combined.
- Add half of the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mix with a rubber spatula being careful to not over mix. Add the remaining flour and mix. You'll notice a cookie dough will form.
- Use a small cookie scoop (2 teaspoon size), scoop the dough and roll into a ball using your hands. Place on a silicon mat lined or parchment paper-lined cookie sheet, about 1 inch apart.
- Use the end of a clean, rounded butter knife to make the heart-shaped “thumbprint” on each cookie. Add about 1/4 teaspoon of jam or marmalade to each cookie.
- Bake for 10 to 11 minutes at 350°F. Place the cookies on a cooling rack.
Make the glaze
- Whisk the glaze ingredients together in a small mixing bowl.
- You can use a spoon or you can add glaze into a zippered plastic bag and cut out a very small hole in one of the corners of the bag.
- Drizzle the glaze over the cookies to your liking.
Notes
I’m so excited to participate in this Valentine’s event (again). This is the sixth year of our event and we want to continue to make a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer.
Cancer is the #1 cause of death of children by disease in the U.S. There are 40,000 U.S. children actively battling cancer right now. The National Cancer Institute’s budget for childhood cancer is less than 4%. It’s such a small number and that’s why I got involved.
And with the ongoing pandemic, children are still being diagnosed with cancer. It’s imperative that we raise awareness and continue to raise funds to fund the ongoing pediatric cancer research!
Help us make a difference by donating to Cookies for Kids' Cancer!
Our goal is to raise at least $3000. Because these three companies: OXO, Mediavine and Dixie Crystals have each pledged to match our donations raised through this campaign up to $3000! That means when we raise $1, it turns into $4!
Thank you to so many of you who have already donated, please help us reach our goal so we can get the full matching donations and help us make an even huge difference!
