Baby Shower Cake Part II

April 11, 2010

in Cake Decorating, Cakes, Popular

I finished the shower cake (that I worked on all week) was finished around 2am (Saturday morning) and we drove it over from the Space Coast to Tampa at around 7:30am. We had so much fun at the baby shower and we’re so excited for our friends!

Here's the finished cake before it left my house. I took the flowers, birds' nest and egg off before transporting.

Here is the invitation. Initially, I got a few different cake pictures from Andrea and I wasn’t sure which direction to go. Once I received the invitation below, I pretty much knew what I wanted to do. Do you think the cake looks like the invitation?

The birds’ nest was created from a tutorial from I am baker. Thanks again, Amanda! It’s completely edible and made from baked sugar cookie dough and “glued” together from royal icing. I used the sugar cookie recipe from this post, dyed Americolor chocolate brown and Wilton’s royal icing recipe dyed brown using Americolor chocolate brown.

Here's a close-up of the birds' nest. Sorry it's kind of blurry though.

The egg was already painted foam, we bought from Michael’s. The birds and flowers are made of gumpaste. I piped details on the birds with royal icing.

The drive to Tampa was a little stressful because this is the first time we have driven a cake across the state! It made it there in one piece and I didn’t have to use my emergency kit. I learned from my Wilton instructor to always bring tools with you on a cake delivery, just in case you need to make a repair.

Here is the cake after it arrived.

I’m happy to report the parents-to-be loved the cake and that’s what matters! :)

Hi Jen, thank you so much! :) It probably took me 15-18 hours. I spent a few hours a night on it. I made the cake and buttercream icing from scratch too.

That is amazing! I don’t know much about cake decorating but I do know that I see alot of fondant on cakes, I guess it allows for a smoother “finish”? Did you use fondant on yours? If not then I am thoroughly impressed!!

Thanks, you’re so sweet, Jen! Yes it is iced in buttercream first and then covered in fondant (so the fondant will stick). I use a brand of fondant that is easy to work with and actually tastes good. It does give it a more smooth finish and to me is a little more elegant. It also along with the buttercream locks in the moisture of the cake but that’s my opinion. :) I found this link so you can learn more about it, if you wish http://www.ehow.com/about_4618916_fondant.html Thanks for stopping by and your nice comments.

The cake was sooo amazing it was beyond words! Everybody at the shower was so impressed and we took about a million pictures of it. It was so beautiful that we didn’t want to cut into it, but once we did we found out that it tasted fabulous as well! Personally, we think this is your best cake yet, but we may be a little biased ;) Thank you again for being such an amazing friend!

Thanks so much for all of the nice comments!

@ravenouscouple – :) I have never done a wedding cake before! I’m hoping my first one will be my sister’s…although she isn’t engaged yet. :D

@Barbara – Thank you so much! It came from not knowing what to do because the mom-to-be sent me some sample cakes she liked but they all had a different style to them when I received the invite in the mail, I knew exactly what shades of pink and green and then just tried to mimic it the best I could.
